The Traitors Circle: An Engrossing Story of Defiance Against the Nazis

On 10 September 1943, an informal circle of influential associates gathered in a small apartment in Charlottenberg district. Their hostess was Elisabeth, and the official excuse for the get-together was her sister’s fiftieth birthday. However, it served as a pretext for a group of prominent figures meeting to discuss what should happen now that it had become evident that Hitler was losing the war.

Courage and Conviction

Otto, an ex-diplomat, expressed confidence about the recent fall of Mussolini indicated Italy’s willingness to make peace with the Allied forces. At the same time, Hanna Solf eagerly looked forward to the end of the Führer: “We’ll put him against a wall.” Von Thadden herself, a devout Protestant and former headteacher of an elite girls’ school, cautioned about the human suffering that might ensue after the conclusion of the war. To the attendees on that fateful day for tea, sandwiches and an unpleasant wartime treat known as “wartime cake,” Germany’s rebirth into a free society appeared imminent that it felt tangible.

From Patriotism to Resistance

Few among them were innate revolutionaries. A number were from distinguished military families who had been burned by the outcome of the first world war and the following shame of the treaty of Versailles. For these devoted nationals, the regime’s vow to reestablish German strength, as well as financial security, had been initially appealing. The restoration to the enduring values of Goethe and Beethoven seemed inevitable.

That idealism soon faded. When the grim reality of their policies for racial cleansing became clear, it was impossible to do nothing. Back in 1933, Kiep, serving as consul abroad, gambled his career to pay tribute to Albert Einstein, the best-known Jewish refugee fleeing the regime. The act resulted in a prompt return to Germany. As for the hostess, the moment of reckoning occurred when she realized the regime’s plan aimed for the church – a new “German church” in which the leader surpassed the Messiah. For Countess Lagi von Ballestrem, the mission was assisting those in hiding – Jews in hiding – survive the terrible Berlin winters, then guiding them toward safety using covert routes and fake identities. Lagi mastered subtle defiance: in all her movements, she made sure to carry a bag of weighty items on either side – this provided a plausible reason for omitting the mandated salute.

The Informant’s Role

What no one realised until it was too late was that there was an informant within the circle. This individual came to the event seemingly trustworthy, but looking back, suspicions arose about him. He paid close attention to each conversation as if taking mental notes and attempted to elicit information for further disclosures. That was because he was typing it all up and delivering it to his Gestapo boss, the deeply feared Herbert Lange. Within 18 months, nearly everyone who had been present that day would be killed or incarcerated.

The Unfolding Tragedy

Across numerous concise sections, every conclusion leaving suspense, the narrative tracks the complex developments by which these unexpected resisters attempted to avoid and finally accept their destiny. In the beginning an eerie quiet followed, but then came an official visit or a physical apprehension. Because they represented noteworthy captives with names or fortunes tied to the nation’s former aristocracy, there was no doubt that they would be exploited for propaganda purposes. There were show trials, featuring renowned attorneys and witnesses and family pleas. It didn’t do any good. Kiep was hanged, Elisabeth was decapitated. Another member, a mandarin at the treasury, managed to break away from his guards and take his own life, while the rest got long prison sentences.

A Page-Turner with a Powerful Message

Readers will find a rare achievement – a fact-based narrative that progresses as dynamically as an airport thriller. Yet this is also a deeply thoughtful examination, raising a challenging query: Which among us could muster the strength to step up, speak out and face the inevitably terrible consequences?
