Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game

The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament introduced into the game since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is now available and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mayhem Mounts drop also adds a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the development team had already known it was time for a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we aimed for a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," noted a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your companions on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move perfectly suited for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a primary use cases for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead adds. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the thrust, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you lower your spear and get more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the wings and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she hints.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport without delay.

Another key feature in this new update is the underwater mount. This underwater creature, which is modeled after the seashells found in-game for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it transport you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your air supply, so there's no necessity to come up for air for oxygen.

The other inclusions are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a zombie Nautilus popping up in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've long considered this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a few different ideas for aquatic rides that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus design sketches looked compelling, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also adds that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can survive in the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some highly requested adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can traverse rivers and lakes while atop a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

All told, the year-end release of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a considerable upgrade. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mounts of Mayhem update is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
