José Mourinho Shows Interest in Benfica Managerial Role

José Mourinho has expressed interested in taking over as the new manager of SL Benfica, after the exit of Bruno Lage.

Context of the Scenario

Bruno Lage was dismissed after Benfica suffered a shocking 3-2 loss to Qarabag in the UEFA Champions League.

Club chairman Rui Costa mentioned that the club aims to name a new coach before Saturday, though he declined to comment on individual names.

Sources suggest that the Portuguese manager is willing to a comeback to Portugal's soccer, more than two decades after he departed for Chelsea.

The Special One's Past with Benfica

José Mourinho began his managerial journey with SL Benfica in the year 2000, though his stay was brief, spanning only 10 matches.

He subsequently gained fame with Porto, leading them to multiple trophies, including the Champions League in 2003–04.

From that point, he has coached elite clubs across the continent, including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real, Manchester United, Spurs, AS Roma, and Fenerbahce.

Possible Challenges and Matches

Should hired, Mourinho would face his former club Chelsea in the Champions League on September 30.

Benfica is also set to meet Newcastle and Real Madrid in the league phase.

At present, Benfica ranks sixth in the Primeira Liga, five points behind table-toppers FC Porto.

Political Background

This decision to replace Lage aligns with upcoming presidential elections on 25 October.

Joao Noronha Lopes, the favorite, has allegedly expressed preference in Rúben Amorim of Man United.

The president emphasized that the decision was taken solely for sporting purposes and not for election gains.

"I'm not here to protect any roles," he said. "My goal is to secure the best outcome for Benfica."
