German Liberty ‘At Risk’ Says Merz as He Cautions Against ‘Forced Settlement’ in the Eastern European Nation
Opening the debate in the Bundestag, Leader the head of government set out the stakes this autumn, declaring that the nation faces choices “concerning core principles rather than minor aspects” that will define its destiny.
“It is essential to adopt a sober look at reality in order to select the right path for our country,” he remarked.
He stressed that “our freedom is endangered” with a increasing “feeling of vulnerability,” adding that Germany’s economic model is also “strained” from “a new form of protectionism.”
Additionally, he cautioned against “factions at home and abroad” that question social cohesion and weaken German democracy.
On security, he started by noting that the Russian invasion of the neighboring country “has a very concrete impact on our lives,” and stressed: “We want this war to end.”
But he conceded that “there is reason to fear it will continue for some time.”
Merz stressed that “concluding the conflict at the expense of Ukraine’s political sovereignty and borders is out of the question,” and alerted that “an imposed resolution” could “further motivate Putin to seek his subsequent goal.”
He then censured recent Russian drone incursions into Poland and Romania.
“Putin has long been testing the limits,” he commented, but made clear:
This will not be tolerated this.
‘We Want to Be Able to Defend Ourselves’, the Chancellor Affirms
The leader repeated his frequent stance on defense, asserting:
Our aim is to be able to defend ourselves so that we do not have to defend ourselves.
But he also made a broader point about the importance of modernizing the nation, its emergency preparedness systems, and the army.
He also addressed trade, including seeking new partners “amid growing global challenges.”
He noted that “the distinction between internal and external affairs is simply outdated,” as the government’s actions abroad “help maintain liberty, peace and prosperity at home.”
He also referenced progress on his government’s mission to reduce the number of refugee requests in response to growing migratory pressures.
