Ex- Media Personality Alan Jones Pleads Not Guilty to 27 Charges
The former radio host has been charged with twenty-five charges of indecent acts and two further charges of unwanted physical contact connected with nine separate alleged victims, after prosecutors announced that two complainants would cease to be involved in the criminal matter.
Legal Developments
The accused was scheduled to appear in the local court on Thursday to face 44 counts of indecent assault involving 11 different individuals all over 17 and more mature. However, he was not obliged to be present during the short session at the local courthouse.
The court heard that 17 of the allegations had been dropped and an additional two complainants were no longer the proceedings.
“We’ve seen a major shift in the defendant’s case,” his lawyer Bryan Wrench told the court.
Defense Pleas
His counsel explained that his client had filed not guilty pleas on all of the downgraded allegations. The trial will move forward in a local court before a presiding official, instead of in the higher court in front of a judicial jury.
Wrench asked for an 8-week adjournment to review what he called “outstanding” legal concerns, including alleged unauthorized disclosures to the media.
He highlighted that additional allegations had emerged on earlier that week, and media were notified quickly after he was notified by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Trial Timeline
Sharon Freund initially expressed doubt about the extent of the requested adjournment but finally agreed to the application. The proceedings is scheduled to return on 11 November, with the legal case slated for the year 2026.
Officials learned that the DPP estimated the proceedings would take a month and a half, while the defense suggested it could require several months.
“We lack the resources to handle a extended trial,” the magistrate commented, noting that the proceedings was a “massive drain on already stretched resources.”
Background
The defendant was initially accused with committing a series of acts in several places across New South Wales between 2001 and more recently.
Authorities set up an investigative unit in early 2024 to investigate alleged inappropriate acts and sexual touching events involving the media figure.
Jones has previously rejected all claims and announced that he was considering legal action against media outlets for what he described as “completely untrue” accusations.
Jones last appeared in December of last year, when it was proposed that he would go through a jury trial.
“I am not guilty, and I intend to present my case to a jury,” Jones stated at the earlier date. “You should be aware … these accusations are all either baseless or they twist the truth.”
